December, 2007

President’s message There are a few of us that that really, really like CNC.   This is a passion is not shared by all, so we don’t do too much, but we sure did it last meeting.

Elections: Its time again to decide who runs the club. To all the officers who have served so well, so far, thank you for your service. None of us are drunk with power, so if you want to participate, we welcome that.  The current officers will give all help needed to get a new officer acquainted with the duties. If you want to contribute your service but don’t want an existing office, we can probably make something up for you. Or offer to be an apprentice. I feel we need several people that can move into a spot and take over. I think the newsletter editor position is where we are most in need of backup. I will be glad to patiently train a contender.

MDMC Minutes-14 November 2007

President John Osborne opened the meeting at 7:30 pm .  Ken Hunt specified the treasury balance to be $xxxxxx.

Dick Morino announced the discontinuation of the MCC metal shop class previously attended by several members. He indicated the possibility of an alternative shop becoming available in January 2008, located at Gratiot and Hall Road , of the L'anse Cruz North school district.

Ron Schmidt  Illustrated, with fine photographs and a handmade model, a milling technique using the model as a stop for a tracer to rough cut and then refine a work piece duplicating the model.  The model and the work piece are mounted on separate but identical vices and the XY cutter movement is done by hand operation.  Mr. Schmidt reminded me to mention to the membership that the December meeting has always been our swap and shop meeting, for anyone interested in bringing in any surplus bits and pieces for sale or swap.

Ken Hunt reminded me that December is also our dues due month for all members.

Ron Grimes demonstrated a support tool for his lathe, which provides anti-bending support for very small diameter shafts. Some set-up time is required but, once done, the fixture supports small diameter shafts successfully during subsequent machining operations.  He provided a sidebar sheet for anyone interested in making this fixture.

Steve Huck specified Graham Industries as a source of kits for small model steam engines.

Rick Chownyk was the star of this meeting, giving his talk “Cheap and free CNC.” It is difficult to summarize: if you missed it, then you missed a lot.  Rick would be glad to answer any questions or work with to build your very own CNC machine.
